In Edo-period Japan, hours were not fixed. The night — sunset to sunrise — was divided into six temporal hours; the fifth is the Hour of the Ox (ushi no koku). That hour is split into four quarters, and the third quarter is ushimitsu-doki: the true Japanese witching hour, when spirits are said to walk. Because the length of night changes with season and latitude, ushimitsu shifts every single night. Solar positions are computed astronomically on your device.
The Calling Tone is 19 Hz infrasound — the frequency British engineer Vic Tandy famously identified while investigating a “haunted” laboratory. Its effects are not scientifically established, and most phone speakers cannot reproduce it: the tone is being generated, but you will not hear it. The Cleansing Tone is 4096 Hz, the pitch of crystal tuning forks used in purification rituals — this one rings clear. Both are theatrical effects. Mind your volume with headphones or subwoofers.
